A convenient and efficient palladium-catalyzed C-H bond activation for the assembly of N-aryl carbazoles I (Ar = 4-methylphenyl, 3-fluorophenyl, naphthalen-2-yl, etc.; R1 = H, 2-OCH3, 4-CH3, etc.; R2 = H, CH3, Cl, CF3, OCF3, CO2CH3), including 7-phenyl-7H-benzofuro[2,3-b]carbazole and 9-phenyl-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole is reported, in which two C-N bonds were formed under one set of conditions. The desired carbazoles I were achieved in decent yields with a wide substrate scope by utilizing readily available 2-iodo biphenyls 2-I-4-R2C6H4 R1C6H4 and aromatic amines ArNH2 as starting materials.
