A method for the direct arylation of carbazole derivs, and C-arylation of tetrahydrocarbazole derivatives (substituted indole derivatives) with diaryliodonium salts mediated by potassium tert-butoxide (KOtBu) was developed. The feasibility of an alkynylation of tetrahydrocarbazole by this protocol was also demonstrated. The title compound thus formed was (phenylethynyl)-2,3,4,4a,9,9a-hexahydro-9H-carbazole derivative (I). The advantages of the present reaction include easy handling of this metal-free process. The application of this method to the manufacture of photoelec. functional materials is anticipated. The method may also be applied to the the synthesis of related alkaloids (no data). The synthesis of the target compounds was achieved using 9H-carbazole derivatives, 2,3,4,4a,9,9a-hexahydro-9H-carbazole and 1,2,3,3a,4,8b-hexahydrocyclopent[b]indole as starting materials and diphenyliodonium 1,1,1-trifluoromethanesulfonate (1:1) derivatives as arylation reactants. The title compounds thus formed included 9-phenyl-9H-carbazole derivatives
