Intermediate 1 : 4-iodo-3,5-Dimethylisoxazole; Nitric acid (13ml) was added dropwise (exothermic reaction) to a mixture of 3,5- dimethylisoxazole (31.3g, 320mmol) and iodine (37.3g, 150 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h. The reaction mixture was hydrolysed with a mixture of ice and water and extracted with DCM. The organic phase was washed with a solution of Na2S203, dried over Na2S04 and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound as a yellow solid (60g, 83%).
