Outstanding levels of enantioselectivity (up to 97% ee) using catalytic amounts of chiral Lewis acids in conjugate radical additions was achieved. Addnl., high levels of enantioselectivity at room temperature using sub-stoichiometric amounts of chiral Lewis acid are also reported. Thus, iso-Pr radical addition to N-cinnamoyl oxazolidinone at -78° using a chiral Lewis acid derived from MgI2 and chiral bioxazoline (4S,5R)-I in sub-stoichiometric yield (40 mol %) provides conjugate addition product (R)-II of high optical purity (94% isolated yield, 97% ee). The effects of bite angle and dihedral angle in a variety of chiral bioxazoline ligands on the enantioselectivity and absolute stereochem. of the conjugate radical addition reaction were studied.
