The reaction of 1:1 zwitterionic intermediate generated in situ from dibenzoylacetylene and triphenylphosphine with 2-aminobenzimidazole afforded Benzo[4,5]imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine in good yields while as the reaction with 2-amino derivatives of benzothiazole, thiazole and isoxazole gave enamine ketones. Protonation of the highly reactive 1:1 intermediate produced in the reaction between alkyl isocyanides and dibenzoylacetylene by aldehydes (containing acidic hydrogen) gave highly functionalized secondary ketenimines. The products were generated in good yields and characterized by standard analytical techniques such as IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectrometry. Single crystal X-ray diffraction has been established for six structures. Short reaction time, good yields, fairly mild conditions and simple work-up procedure are the notable advantages of this synthetic protocol.
