Thionylchloride (62 ml, 0.52 mol) was added slowly to a solution of (5 -cyclopropyl-3 – (2,6-dichlorophenyl)isoxazol-4-yl)methanol (21 g, 0.073 mol) in dichloromethane (100 ml) at 0-5 C. The reaction mixture was then allowed to warm to 25-30 C and stirred for a further 2 h before being concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product was then added to a mixture of bromo-3-chloro-phenol (16.2 g 0.081 mol), potassium carbonate (67 g 0.48 mol) and sodium iodide (19 g 0.12 mol) in DMF (100 ml). The mixture was heated at 60-65 C for 16 h, poured into water (500 ml) and extracted with ethyl acetate (600 ml). The organic layers were washed with water, brine, dried, concentrated under reduced pressure and the crude product purified by chromatography on silica gel eluting with 20% EtOAc in petroleum ether to afford the titled compound as a solid (18 g, 60 %).
