Cyclireduction of 3-methyl-4-nitro-5-(1,3-diaryl-1-keto-4-n-butyl)isoxazoles (III) with stannous chloride and concentrated hydrochloric acid gives 5,7-diaryl-3-methyl-7,8-dihydro-6H-isoxazolo<4,5-b>azepines (IV).The isoxazoles (III) have been prepared by the Michael reaction of 3,5-dimethyl-4-nitroisoxazole (I) with alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones (II) in the presence of piperidine.The mass spectral fragmentations of III and IV have been discussed.
