Influences of Hydrothermal Modification on Nitrogen Thermal Conversion of Low-Rank Coals

The influence of hydrothermal modification on thermal conversion of coal-N in low-rank coals was investigated in this paper. Hydrothermal modification has been performed using three typical Chinese low-rank coals at final modification temperatures of 200, 250, and 300 C. An analytical pyro-probe coupled to a pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) system was used to study the release characteristics of nitrogen-containing compounds from raw and modified coal. In addition, a tube furnace apparatus was used to study the release characteristics of nitrogen pollutants during pyrolysis and combustion of Zhaotong raw and modified coal. Results showed that hydrothermal modification affected the content and type of nitrogen-containing compounds. Some triple bonds present in the coal structure are broken to form amides. The presence of azoles decreases sharply after modification, but it increases as the hydrothermal modification temperature increases. During tube furnace pyrolysis, the HCN yield decreases after modification; similarly, with the increase of modification temperature, NH3 is released in greater quantity after modification, but the release decreases as the modification temperature increases. NH3 may be converted from HCN through secondary reactions. Hydrothermal modification is conducive to NO emission reduction in coal combustion process; however, increasing the modification temperature restrains the NO emission to some extent.

Biodiversity, isolation and genome analysis of sulfamethazine-degrading bacteria using high-throughput analysis

Sulfamethazine (SM2) is one of the sulfonamide antibiotics that is frequently detected in aquatic environment. Given the complex structure of SM2 and its potential threat to the environment, it is necessary to determine the degradation behavior of high-concentration SM2. The mechanisms of community structure and diversity of activated sludge were analyzed. A novel SM2-degrading strain YL1 was isolated which can degrade SM2 with high concentration of 100?mg?L?1. Strain YL1 was identified as Paenarthrobacter ureafaciens and there was also a significant increase in the genus during acclimation. Additional SM2 metabolic mechanisms and genomic information of YL1 were analyzed for further research. The succession of the community structure also investigated the effect of SM2 on the activated sludge. This result not only advances the current understanding of microbial ecology in activated sludge, but also has practical implications for the design and operation of the environmental bioprocesses for treatment of antimicrobial-bearing waste streams.

Previously the toxicity of 45 heterogeneous environmental chemicals on growth and membrane functions in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells (Cascorbi et al., 1993) was examined. In this study the inhibitory effects of the same set of chemicals on yeast RNA synthesis rate, measuring [2-(14)C]uracil uptake during cell proliferation are presented. The sensitivity of this test system was three to six times higher than that of the proliferation rate assay. In addition, the range of the EC20 values were similar to the range from the mammalian CHO cell proliferation test. The relatively good correlation with the yeast cell growth rate (r = 0.78, P = 0.0001) suggests that yeast RNA synthesis is a simple and rapid method of detecting a wide range of toxic compounds without the disadvantage of the insensitivity of the growth rate assay.
