Tunable Visible and Near Infrared Photoswitches

A class of tunable visible and near-infrared donor-acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA) photoswitches were efficiently synthesized in two to four steps from commercially available starting materials with minimal purification. Using either Meldrum’s or barbituric acid “acceptors” in combination with aniline-based “donors”, an absorption range spanning from 450 to 750 nm is obtained. Additionally, photoisomerization results in complete decoloration for all adducts, yielding fully transparent, colorless solutions and films. Detailed investigations using density functional theory, nuclear magnetic resonance, and visible absorption spectroscopies provide valuable insight into the unique structure-property relationships for this novel class of photoswitches. As a final demonstration, selective photochromism is accomplished in a variety of solvents and polymer matrices, a significant advantage for applications of this new generation of DASAs.

A comprehensive overview of directing groups applied in metal-catalysed C-H functionalisation chemistry

The present review is devoted to summarizing the recent advances (2015-2017) in the field of metal-catalysed group-directed C-H functionalisation. In order to clearly showcase the molecular diversity that can now be accessed by means of directed C-H functionalisation, the whole is organized following the directing groups installed on a substrate. Its aim is to be a comprehensive reference work, where a specific directing group can be easily found, together with the transformations which have been carried out with it. Hence, the primary format of this review is schemes accompanied with a concise explanatory text, in which the directing groups are ordered in sections according to their chemical structure. The schemes feature typical substrates used, the products obtained as well as the required reaction conditions. Importantly, each example is commented on with respect to the most important positive features and drawbacks, on aspects such as selectivity, substrate scope, reaction conditions, directing group removal, and greenness. The targeted readership are both experts in the field of C-H functionalisation chemistry (to provide a comprehensive overview of the progress made in the last years) and, even more so, all organic chemists who want to introduce the C-H functionalisation way of thinking for a design of straightforward, efficient and step-economic synthetic routes towards molecules of interest to them. Accordingly, this review should be of particular interest also for scientists from industrial R&D sector. Oxidation of alkylarenes by nitrate catalyzed by polyoxophosphomolybdates: Synthetic applications and mechanistic insights

Alkylarenes were catalytically and selectively oxidized to the corresponding benzylic acetates and carbonyl products by nitrate salts in acetic acid in the presence of Keggin type molybdenum-based heteropolyacids, H3+xPVxMo12-xO40 (x = 0-2). H 5PV2Mo10O40 was especially effective. For methylarenes there was no over-oxidation to the carboxylic acid contrary to what was observed for nitric acid as oxidant. The conversion to the aldehyde/ketone could be increased by the addition of water to the reaction mixture. As evidenced by IR and 15N NMR spectroscopy, initially the nitrate salt reacted with H5PV2Mo10O 40 to yield a NVO2+[H 4PV2Mo10O40] intermediate. In an electron-transfer reaction, the proposed NVO2 +[H4PV2Mo10O40] complex reacts with the alkylarene substrate to yield a radical-cation-based donor-acceptor intermediate, NIVO2[H4PV 2Mo10O40]-ArCH2R+.. Concurrent proton transfer yields an alkylarene radical, ArCHR., and NO2. Alternatively, it is possible that the NVO 2+[H4PV2Mo10O 40] complex abstracts a hydrogen atom from alkylarene substrate to directly yield ArCHR. and NO2. The electron transfer-proton transfer and hydrogen abstraction scenarios are supported by the correlation of the reaction rate with the ionization potential and the bond dissociation energy at the benzylic positions of the alkylarene, respectively, the high kinetic isotope effect determined for substrates deuterated at the benzylic position, and the reaction order in the catalyst. Product selectivity in the oxidation of phenylcyclopropane tends to support the electron transfer-proton transfer pathway. The ArCHR. and NO2 radical species undergo heterocoupling to yield a benzylic nitrite, which undergoes hydrolysis or acetolysis and subsequent reactions to yield benzylic acetates and corresponding aldehydes or ketones as final products.

Efficient synthesis of bis-isoxazole ethers via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition catalysed by Zn/Zn2+ and their antifungal activities

An efficient method was developed for synthesising isoxazoles. A series of novel bis-isoxazole ether compounds VI, VII and VIII were synthesised starting from different substituted aldehydes (I) via a 1,3-dispolar cycloaddition using Zn/Zn2+ as a catalyst; these were characterised by FT-IR, HRMS, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the antimicrobial properties of the synthesised products were investigated. The synthesised compounds exhibited significant antifungal activities in comparison with the standard drugs, fluconazole and itraconazole. It was found that Candida albicans was sensitive to 2-substituted phenyl bis-isoxazole ethers bearing pyridyl.
